Please join us in celebrating with the staff, volunteers, and seniors of Eastern Area Agency on Aging (EAAA) as we cut the ribbon at the Durgin Center, a newly renovated 7,200 SF senior center in Brewer!

On March 30, 2022, folks from EAAA, Nickerson & O’Day, Inc. (NOD), Artifex Architects and Engineers, City of Brewer and members of the Durgin family opened the doors to welcome in the general public (see images below). It was a great turnout to christen the space that is named for the late Major General Nelson Durgin. Maj. Gen. Durgin was a long-time member of the EAAA Board of Directors and a well-respected member of our community.

NOD began preconstruction services in late 2019, working closely with EAAA and Artifex Architects and Engineers. An initial phase of construction took place in 2020 which involved renovating the commercial kitchen space to allow the Meals on Wheels program to begin operating out of their new home at 274 State Street. The second phase of construction focused on the café, classroom, offices and common spaces.

The Durgin Center fills a void that has existed since the senior center on Hammond Street in Bangor closed its doors more than five years ago. This project marks the third major renovation that NOD has completed for EAAA over recent years.

We look forward to seeing the exciting ways EAAA and the community utilize this versatile… and aptly named space over the coming years!

Nickerson & O’Day is best known for constructing buildings… but once in a while we get an unusual request. Our crew was able to take apart a 50′ Wide by 30′ Tall Carousel bldg. piece by piece, transport it from Newfield to Orrington, and reconstruct it without damaging a single piece! Check out the recent news coverage of the Carousel Relocation for the Curran Homestead located in Orrington, right in our back yard.
