There's no other building like it in Maine. That's the best way to = describe=20 the new $16.5-million research building at The Jackson Laboratory.

When completed this fall, the new research building will contain 16=20 laboratories, affiliated storage and conference rooms, and offices. By=20 themselves, these facilities are not unusual; what is unique about the = new=20 research building was the emphasis placed on function, design, and=20 engineering.

Plans for the new research building were being readied when a fire = leveled=20 Morrell Park, TJL's mouse-production facility, in May 1989. Trustees = voted to=20 proceed with the new research building to provide TJL researchers with = modern=20 facilities and an environment conducive to genetics research.

As conceived, the new research building has two wings, North and = South, with=20 an orientation along Route 3 just north of TJL. Each wing contains two = floors=20 and eight laboratories. The interconnectors between the new research = building=20 and TJL and between the wings contain offices for research scientists = and their=20 associates.

The laboratory engaged the services of the Tishman Construction Corp. = of=20 Maine to manage the project, which was designed by Payette Associates of = Boston.=20 Pat Keating, site supervisor for Tishman Construction, arrived at TJL in = July=20 1992, when "they had just started drilling the ledge for the = foundation."

While blasting the granite ledge for the foundation, crews reduced = the=20 potential shock wave by placing a giant rubber-tire blanket over each = blast=20 site. This blanket was a mat made from rubber tires cut into quarters, = then=20 interlinked with steel cable. The mat "kept the percussion down," = Keating=20 said.

"The laboratory is a world leader in producing these important mice, = and we=20 needed to be sensitive to the effects (that) vibrations could have on = the=20 breeding of mice," he said.

"We also used less powerful explosives to do the blasting," he said. = TJL=20 representatives had expressed concern about shock waves and noise; "the = steps we=20 took greatly diminished both," Keating stated.

E.L. Shea Inc. of Ellsworth did the project's sitework, which = included=20 building a new parking lot across Route 3 from TJL. Both wings share a = common=20 foundation, with the heavy mechanical equipment set on the ground floor = beneath=20 the North Wing.

Ken Shea said that "a contract of this magnitude (more than $1.25 = million) is=20 very significant to us...especially in these uncertain economic = times.

"Beyond this, the project's requirements of quality workmanship, = precise=20 scheduling, and extensive coordination offered a challenge we looked = forward to=20 meeting," he noted.

Nickerson & O'Day Inc. of Brewer built the new research building = and=20 finished its interior, while the utilies were set in place by Lappin = Brothers=20 Inc. of Malden, Mass.

Jack Kelley of Nickerson & O'Day remembers when construction = started on=20 the new research building. "We started that project in August of last = year, and=20 we worked all the way through the winter," he said. "The biggest = challenge was=20 erecting the structure back then."

The construction site was partially closed in, but "if you had been = down=20 there in January and February," Kelley said, "you would've seen the = structural=20 steel of a big building. When we poured the concrete, we had to throw = big tents=20 over it and heat it so it could set up."

Actual construction started at where the new research building = connected with=20 TJL. Crews raised the structural steel for the first office link (the = one with=20 the laboratory), then for the South Wing. Since that wing was built = first, it=20 will be occupied first (by Oct. 1, according to the construction = schedule.

Construction extended north across the second office link to the = North Wing.=20 The final structure, a stair tower, took shape earlier this summer. The = tower=20 will culminate in a rooftop terrace.

The new research building's exterior incorporates traditional red = brick and=20 plentiful glass on the walls; the 521 insulated windows going into the = building=20 were made in Vassalboro. The decision to use these materials and to = install=20 copper roofs on the wings resulted from consultations with Acadia = National Park=20 officials.

The park abuts TJL, particularly to the south near Sieur de Monts = Spring and=20 Bear Brook Picnic Area. Two mountains, Champlain and Dorr, overlook TJL; = wherever anyone turns on the laboratory's grounds, the mountains are = there on=20 the horizon.

Park officials met with TJL management so the new research building = would not=20 affect the views from park property. The Park Service and TJL worked = together on=20 the new research building's exterior appearance. As an earth tone, the = red brick=20 melds well with the background when viewed from Dorr Mountain. The = copper roofs,=20 while initially glistening beneath the summer sun, will soon weather to = a dark=20 color that will not call attention to the building.

Payette Associates enhanced the striking architecture of the new = research=20 building by placing much glass in the exterior walls. The two office = links are=20 sheltered only by glass, which lets sunlight reach the interior = corridors.=20 Windows form the upper walls of the stair tower, from where TJL = personnel can=20 look across Frenchman Bay to Hancock and Gouldsboro.

Of course, the 16 laboratories are the centerpieces of the new = research=20 building. Constructed in two sizes, the laboratories are fully equipped = with the=20 necessary utilities and research equipment, from benches to shelves and=20 sinks.

The specialized research to be done in the new research building = affected not=20 only its design (most windows will not open, for example, to prevent = outside=20 contaminants from reaching the research mice), but its utilities, = too.

Take the air-handling equipment, for instance.

JAX mice require a special environment in which to live. Temperatures = can't=20 be too cold or too warm; humidity can't be too low or too high. Then = there are=20 the environmental needs for people working with the mice; not only did = planners=20 need to consider the mice, but TJL employees, too, in determining how = much air=20 to move through the laboratories and at what temperature and humidity to = keep=20 it.

"Each of the labs has separate services: gas, electricity, water, all = that.=20 It's been an unusual project in that aspect; you have three-to-four = times as=20 much mechanical and electrical (equipment) in this building than you = would in a=20 typical office building," Keating said.

According to Dan Tishman of Tishman Construction Corp., the air will = be=20 changed "20-30 times an hour in the labs. It's important to keep it = fresh and=20 moving. That's one reason why you'll see more air-handling equipment in = here=20 than you would elsewhere."

To heat the new research building, The Jackson Laboratory has = installed a new=20 boiler in another building and run a 5-inch steam line from there to the = new=20 building. The steam heats water, which circulates through fin heaters = before=20 reaching the rooftop-mounted heat-recovery unit in each wing.

These units, which contain glycol, warm it with heat drawn from the = water.=20 When the thermostat calls for heat, the recovery unit returns the stored = heat to=20 the heating system.

Keating was pleased with the project, which he described as "right on = schedule. We'll have it done on time.

"I think people will like what they see. It should be a very pleasant = place=20 to work," he said.

"It's really a unique building, because of the state-of-the-art = laboratory=20 equipment in there,' Jack Kelley stated. "it's a very well-appointed = building,=20 with the interior trim and finishes and a lot of fancy woodwork. It will = be a=20 handsome building when it's done."

The new research building will officially open for research later = this=20 fall.
