When John Martin of Bangor, a 19th century businessman, wrote about = the=20 issues of the day and painted watercolor pictures of familiar sights = around the=20 Queen City, he probably didn't spend too much time thinking about what = impact=20 his journals would have in the late 20th century.

He was too busy recording the daily doings of his family and = businesses and=20 musing about the demise of society after the death of President Abraham = Lincoln=20 in April 1865.

The recent discovery of Martin's works, a 650-page journal and three=20 scrapbooks, in a barn in southern Maine, is being hailed by state = historians as=20 an amazing find.

The journals of John Martin, who lived in the Ellsworth-Bangor area = from the=20 1820s to the 1890s, provide an invaluable picture of Maine life from the = Civil=20 War to the 1890s, according to state officials. The journals recently = were put=20 up for sale by an anonymous owner at the Cyr Auction Co. in Gray and = narrowly=20 escaped being carried off by out-of-state antique dealers.

As a result of a cooperative effort by state organizations and = private=20 donors, the journals were purchased for $45,000 and will become the = property of=20 the people of Maine. In the next year or two, the journals and paintings = will be=20 published in book form, and the originals are expected to be exhibited = in shows=20 in Augusta, Bangor and Portland.

"If these journals had not been purchased for the people of Maine, it = is=20 likely they would have disappeared into another private collection," = according=20 to Joseph R. Phillips, director of the Maine State Museum. "Our greatest = fear=20 was that an antique dealer would cut up the journals to sell the = paintings and=20 sketches individually."

The other party instrumental in the purchase was the Center for Maine = History, formerly the Maine Historical Society.

"What makes this effort so important is that neither of our = institutions=20 could have afforded the journals alone," said Richard D'Abate, the = center's=20 director. "We acted together for the long-term good of the state and its = people.=20 The two organizations now own this collection jointly which marks a new = era of=20 cooperation."

Others involved in the effort were the Maine Historic Preservation=20 Commission, the Maine State Library, the Bangor Public Library, the Dead = River=20 Co., Bangor Savings Bank, Nickerson & O'Day Inc., and 25 individual=20 donors.

Before the journals were brought to preservation experts, Arlene = Palmer=20 Schwind, another preservationist, took slides of the pictures in the = journal and=20 was able to read through the text. The importance of these volumes, she = writes=20 in a synopsis for the curators, is considerably enhanced by Martin's = remarkable=20 illustrations, nearly 180 in all, and mostly ink or watercolor. = Virtually every=20 discussion is punctuated with an illustration: family members, prominent = citizens, his places of business, the house in which he lived, fruit = from his=20 garden, and even the syringe that saved his wife's life.

The spectrum of Martin's interests is revealed in the diversity of = his=20 drawings. His depiction of his home on Center Street in Bangor will be = of=20 particular interest to gardeners, as he has identified each variety of = plants=20 popular in home gardens during the last century. His drawing of his son = standing=20 upside down on the sofa will give parents solace that children haven't = changed=20 all that much since the last century. For historians, there are = paintings of the=20 first balloon ascension in Bangor and of iron steamers and = schoolhouses.

The detailed paintings give a remarkable overview of life in the last = century, from what women wore to the games children played, according to = Julia=20 Hunter, who will work on the publication of the journals.

Hunter, who works at the Maine State Museum, says she was especially = taken by=20 the brilliant hues used in the paintings, which take on a folk-art = quality,=20 beautiful in their range of color and depth of detail.

Martin related the history of his family so that future generations = would=20 know of their ancestor's life. It is not known whether Martin has any=20 descendants. According to the journal, Martin wanted to give them the = "most=20 useful and important points in my own and others' experience whereby = they may=20 ... profit and guard against many errors at the same time have a clear = view of=20 the manner in which the Pioneers of this section of the country procured = their=20 education and livelihood, enjoyed their amusements."

Martin spared no details of his years, even including a murder = mystery among=20 his writings, one that seems eerily similar to modern events.

Martin was the son of John Martin (1800-24) and Anne Stratton Martin=20 (1799-?). The senior Martin was a tailor from Cromwell, England, who = emigrated=20 and settled in Ellsworth, where he met and married Anne. Martin Sr. died = when=20 his son was 11 months old. Anne then married Solomon Babson Raynes and = had=20 several more children.

John's mother, Anne, had a remarkable past. Orphaned at an early age, = she was=20 raised by a Dr. and Mrs. Adams of Ellsworth. Adams was a "high blood = aristocrat=20 and a highly educated man a neighbour to Coln Black and one of the best=20 Physicians in Maine also High Sheriff of Hancock county." Although his = wife was=20 "one of he most Lady like, mild disposition, and worthy woman the Town=20 afforded," Dr. Adams fell "violently in love with " the beautiful Miss = Jellerson=20 and allegedly murdered his wife.

One day, Anne and the Adams daughter came home from school: "My = mother was=20 the first to see Mrs. Adams lying on the floor sitting room dead her = head cut=20 most entirely off and teeth of her comb drove in her head and a boot = jack split=20 in two and an axe covered with blood lying by her side."

Dr. Adams was arrested, tried and acquitted. Anne stayed with him as = a=20 housekeeper for a year before going off to teach school in the town of = Columbia.=20 She met and married John Martin Sr. in 1822.

The elder Martin died in 1824. Anne married again in 1826, and the = family=20 lived in a variety of locations in the Bangor-Ellsworth area.

Martin the journalist may have been considered a Renaissance man by = some. He=20 apprenticed with an apothecary at the age of 12 in Hampden. The = apothecary=20 eventually started a dry goods store and then a hotel, the Hampden = House, where=20 young Martin sometimes worked 17-hour days gathering supplies for the = cook,=20 mustering musicians from Bangor, and tending bar. Martin pursued other = lines of=20 work over the years as a butcher, store shopkeeper and accountant.

Although a limp may have kept him out of the Civil War, it did not = give him=20 any problems on the dance floor, as he became a dancer extraordinaire = and wrote=20 books about dancing. Although they are alluded to in the journals, the=20 whereabouts of the dance books remains unknown.

In 1850, Martin married Clara Cary. They had six children, only two = of whom=20 outlived their father.

Martin was also an astute observer of politics and did not mince = words when=20 giving opinions about local politicos. Of Gorham L. Boynton, "the = superintendent=20 of democracy of the whole of eastern Maine," he said he was "tangled up = in=20 principles of reducing our enterprising Yankees to a serfdom." Martin = called=20 Arvida Hayford "the hero of profligacy in Bangor for 25 years," citing = among=20 other things his organization of "prostitution houses."

Martin's love of architecture is also evident in his journals. Many = of his=20 drawings were accompanied by floor plans. He drew the exterior of = several=20 buildings where he worked, and three remarkable views of the interior of = his own=20 "Pioneer Store," with each type of merchandise explained on an = accompanying=20 key.

Martin claimed his grounds at his 130 Center St. home "were a wonder = to all=20 visitors with my own hands I maintained the handsomest variety garden = and lawn=20 for 30 years." He gave full description of his efforts with regards to = his trees=20 and fruits.

Not even the death of two of his daughters halted Martin's need to = document.=20 According to those who have seen the books, among the most poignant=20 illustrations are those of the coffins of his daughters, Anna, who died = at age=20 34, and Mabel, who died at 33, accompanied by scrupulously detailed = descriptions=20 of the funeral arrangements, with diagrams and keys. For example, he = labeled the=20 drawing of Mabel's coffin with a numeral 2, indicating a "harp with one = string=20 broken presented by her idol (sic) whist club."

A public showing of the drawings likely will take place within the = next=20 several years, said Hunter, after the journal, which apparently was = preserved in=20 a dark, dry place in the barn all these years, is treated = professionally.

"These are unique and uttlerly amazing records of 19th century Maine = life,"=20 said Schwind. "Because of their importance, there is no question that = they=20 should be preserved in a Maine repository."
