In an
effort to better serve the medical needs of Downeast Maine, Blue
Hill Memorial Hospital constructed a regional medical center in
Bucksport.
Once the
original town armory in the 1800’s and a neighborhood hardware
store through the 1940’s and 1960’s, this site was selected for
it’s advantageous "downtown" location.
During
construction, Nickerson & O’Day worked hand-in-hand with
architect Lewis & Malm to overcome significant challenges such
as fire and mold remediation, existing foundation/floor
reconstruction and the removal and replacement of the buildings’
entire superstructure - none of whish was contemplated in the
original design. Despite these hurdles, the effort was completed
only four months later than originally planned despite the 125%
increase in design budget and construction scope.
